Product Roundup: Why We Like Discbound System

The Backstory

The disc-binding system was originally invented in good-old-1948-America by Andre Tomas and Andre Martin. In late 1990, their patent expired and the discbound system was adopted by many different companies, but all of them made them with cheap plastic and synthetic covers.

We stumbled upon this patent during our research to design an heirloom notebook made with leather covers and pages that can be endlessly refilled. We took the original idea and re-imagined the design and materials from the solid metal discs, to the slow tanned leather, to the thick paper stock.

Why We Like Discbound System

  • Forgiving - Add, remove or rearrange pages at any time
  • Lays Completely Flat - No need to wrestle with the binding while writing (especially nice for lefties)
  • Refillable - Rather than buying a new journal each time, simply swap in a paper refill and continue using
  • Gets Better With Age - Slow tanned leather and metal discs will age beautifully over time
